Ramblings of a Twenty-Something.
The “N”

On Saturday, Albert, Matt, Nate, and I, hiked to the “N” across from Rancho San Rafael Park on Peavine around dusk.

The "N"

The trail started out relatively flat and windy.  When we got closer to the mountain leading directly to the “N”, it got significantly steeper.  If you know me, I’m afraid of heights.  My knees start to lock up and my legs start to tingle.  Yes, it’s a fear.  (I know, I know.  How am I afraid of heights when I went skydiving in August of last year?  I have no justification.  LOL.)  Nate and Albert jogged up the mountain while Matt and I hiked it at our own pace taking a few breaks.  The vistas are beautiful.  I love being high up (regardless of my phobia).  It’s calm and peaceful, and you feel small and humbled.  It is beauty at its simplest form.

Luckily, Albert knew his way around since he’s a trooper and jogs up this giant at 5 A.M. every morning.  It’s quite motivational.  Once you get up there, you feel the accomplishment (as with any hike to a summit or peak).  I started getting a little worried, because I wasn’t sure if I was able to make it down the way we came up.  It was far too inclined.  I have zero confidence going down really steep hills.  Albert showed us another way around that took us to a few lava rocks and over a couple of ridges.  The only downside was that it was on an older path so the plants nicked and scratched you as you went along.

I recommend the hike to anyone.  Go with a group of friends when the sun is two hours from being set.  Park on the dirt road or start at Rancho and travel the underground tunnel to the trails along the mountains.  It’s a nice challenge and a great workout ending with a gorgeous view of Reno and Sparks.
